Agate Snuff Bottle Depicting A Cockrell

Circa 1840-1880

Height: 7cm

This well hollowed agate snuff bottle with malachite stopper depicts a cockrell in bold relief using the natural color of the material. The cockrell or rooster is the tenth symbolic of the Twelve Terrestrial branches. It serves as the emblem of courage and vigilance since it never forgets the hour. The reverse side of the bottle is left plain to show the beauty of the material. In our opinion, the subject matter, workmanship and material suggest a 1840-1880 date for this fine snuff bottle.
