White nephrite Jade
Height: 4 inches, Width: 4.5 inches
Circa: Qing Period (清朝)
Chinese Workmanship
This outstanding reticulated (pierced openwork) covered jade bowl depicts a floral design of peonies. The piece is rendered from a single boulder of white Khotan nephrite jade. The interior is well hollowed and the body and cover are fully rendered in pierced work. Examples of this technique are found in the Qing period when this type of work was highly sought after by the Imperial Court and by wealthy collectors. In the West, early collectors in Europe and America highly valued jades exemplifying this technique. In our opinion, the subject matter, workmanship and material suggest a Qing Dynasty date for this work of art.
