Prince Ding’s Hall of Constancy Agate Snuff Bottle

Height: 2 7/8 inches, Width: 2 ¼ inches

With White & Green Jade Stopper

Qing Dynasty, 1800-1880

This large size agate snuff bottle is well hollowed and has dramatic markings in the stone.

The shoulders are rendered with archaistic mock ogre head handles with suspended rings.

The bottom shows a well-formed raised foot ring. In the center of the underside is a four character inscription indicating, in our opinion this snuff bottle may possibly have resided in Prince Ding’s Forbidden City residence known as the Hall of Constancy. Prince Ding served under the Empress Dowager and played a significant role in the affairs of State. In our opinion, the subject matter, workmanship and material suggest a Late Qing Dynasty date for this exceptional agate snuff bottle.
