Jade animals worked during the Liao Dynasty show a lively, animated quality which is not seen in later periods. The present pair of bird form pendants demonstrate this naturalistic quality in abundance. The pair are rendered from a similar deep celadon green nephrite jade. The pair may have once been an integral part of a larger necklace.
In our opinion, the subject matter, material and workmanship suggest a Liao date for this pair of exceptional bird pendants.
