Pair of Jade Beads

Nephrite Jade

Length: 7, 7.4 cm (2.75, 3 inches

Warring States Period (戰國時代), Circa 475-221 BC

This pair of beads are of slightly differing size and were possibly once part of a larger necklace of beads and fetishes.  The pair are rendered from nephrite jade of similar deep russet red coloration.  The delicate surface detail is characteristic of jades made during this remarkable period.  In our opinion, the subject matter, material and workmanship suggest a Warring States period date for this outstanding pair.

A comparable pair of oblong bead ornaments of similar size and quality are published in Archaic Jades from the Kwan Collection, Art Gallery of the Chinese University, Hong Kong. Yang Boda. 1994. Plate 155.

From a private American collection.
