White nephrite Jade
Diameter: 2 inches
Circa Qing Dynasty (清朝)
Chinese Workmanship
This delicate miniature brush washer coupe is rendered from a small pebble of white Khotan nephrite jade. The piece, resting on four short feet is well hollowed and polished with a matt finish. The body is decorated with two incised gold meander bands in a fretwork pattern. There is a delicate Qianlong mark on the underside. The brush washer is one of the important items for the scholar’s desk used to mix water and ink together. In our opinion, the subject matter, workmanship and material suggest a Qing dynasty date for this work of art.
