White Nephrite Jade with Lapis Lazuli
Height: 3 inches, Width: 1 5/8 inches
The present snuff bottle is rendered from a pebble of creamy white nephrite jade with a lapis lazuli stopper. The shaped is a flattened spade form with wide shoulders tapering to a narrow base. The foot on the bottle is slightly concave in the style of eighteenth century bottles. The interior is incredibly well hollowed. The surface of the bottle is adorned with a rice grain pattern. The artist has meticulously carved the character for longevity, shou, onto each grain. This auspicious pattern was intended to wish the recipient and long and healthy life. In our opinion, the subject matter, material and workmanship indicate a 1780-1820 date for this elegant snuff bottle.
