With Coral Stopper
Qing Dynasty, 1850-1880
This humorous translucent agate snuff bottle depicts the mythical Liu Hai, patron of businessmen, tempting a three-legged toad with a bronze coin. The legendary figure Liu Hai
would catch a three legged toad by offering him a bronze coin. Once captured, Liu Hai would ride on the back of the toad to the Moon. This snuff bottle is exceptionally well hollowed and the material is highly translucent. The coral stopper humorously depicts a seated toad resting on the stopper. The bottle is thinly rendered and rests on a shallow foot ring. In our opinion, the subject matter, workmanship and material suggest a Late Qing Dynasty date for this handsome snuff bottle.
